Understanding Skin Tones

Since we are discussing skin tones, why don’t we complete this topic first.

If someone asks you your skin color it is easy to say basic color such as white, brown, black, olive, and etc, but when asked what skin tone you have,  it is confusing and challenging to answer the question because we tend to have multiple tones.

Let us start determining and understanding skin tones. I have already mentioned there are many skin tones, so it can be challenging to figure out which tone is right for you.  Please remember your skin tone would determine the shades of make up that is right for you, which can and may be different from your mother and siblings.

There are two ways to determine what is your skin tone:

  1. Look at your nail without nail polish-what shade is it? The skin under your nail is your skin tone, but many times it is hard to really determine the exactness.
  2. Pinch the skin under your arm or any place the sun never shines. This is important because the place where sun does not shine would provide you with accurate answer.   Does the tone tend to appear more reddish-orange, reddish-blue, pinkish-blue, peachy or yellowish? Once you have answered that question determined, you’ll have a benchmark for your natural tone.
